How venture capital works in Sweden

Venture capital, or risk capital as it is often called, is investment aimed at companies with high growth potential. In Sweden, it is often used by start-ups and young companies that want to take the next step, but don't have enough equity to use. For many, it's a chance to develop their idea faster and thus grow in the market.

What is venture capital?

In simple terms, when a company raises venture capital, the investor gets an equity stake in the company. This means they become part-owners and share both the risk and future returns. The money is often used for things that can help the company grow and establish itself more quickly, such as recruitment, professional marketing and the development of products and services.

How the process works

To attract investors, the company needs to show a clear plan for how the business will develop. A pitch and a business plan are important tools to show. Investors also want to see that the team behind the company has the right skills and commitment, and that they have their books, contracts and structure in order. Ensuring all these points are met will make the process easier and increase the chances of raising capital.

Different phases of venture capital

Venture capital can enter the company in several stages. In the early stages, it is often smaller amounts to help companies develop the prototype or test the market. As the company grows, larger investments may be needed, for example to establish an international presence or expand the organization. It is common for the same company to raise capital several times, but with different terms for each round.

Venture capital in the Swedish context

In Sweden, there are both public and private actors offering venture capital. Several funds focus specifically on technology companies, but other industries may also be of interest. Competition for capital is high, so it is important to stand out and show why your company has the potential to succeed.
