Koenigsegg Automotive AB was founded in 1994 by Christian von Koenigsegg with an unreasonable idea that became a reality, to build the world's premier sports car on Swedish soil. Three decades later, the company stands for some of the industry's most talked-about innovations, proprietary carbon fiber structures, groundbreaking powertrains (twin-turbo V8, hybrid solutions and gearless transmission), active aerodynamics and a patented lightweight ecosystem where as much as possible is done in-house.

Business model and positioning

Koenigsegg produces a very limited number of hand-built hypercars per year in Ängelholm. Revenues come from cars, special series, options/components and technology licensing. The customer base is global, order books are long and the brand is associated with extreme engineering, craftsmanship and documented world records (0-400-0, top speed, lap times). The limited volume creates natural scarcity and high resale value.

Technology highlights

  • In-house carbon fiber expertise (incl. AirCore wheels) and integrated development/testing of engines, transmissions and control systems.
  • Direct drive concept (KDD) in Regera and Light Speed gear system in Jesko/Gemera.
  • Flexfuel expertise since the CCXR era and advanced hybridization in latest launched models.

Controlling core technology internally provides a fast iteration rate, low tech risk towards suppliers and clear differentiation. The combination of documented records, own IP and controlled series production makes Koenigsegg a unique Swedish export product in advanced vehicle technology.

Milestones

  • 2002 - CC8S - First production car. Guinness record for the world's most powerful series-produced engine.
  • 2005 - JRC - New top speed on the Nardò test track - the fastest car in the world at the time.
  • 2006 - CCX - Global homologation and Top Gear lap record that stood for years.
  • 2010-2017 - Agera / Agera RS Several world records, including 0-400-0 km/h and highest top speed for a production car.
  • 2014 - One:1 - First serial production with 1:1 power/weight (1 360 hp to 1 360 kg).
  • 2015 - Regera - Hybrid with Koenigsegg Direct Drive - no traditional gearbox.
  • 2019/2020 - Jesko & Jesko Absolut - Track and high-speed focus; extreme aero and LST gearbox.
  • 2020→ - Gemera - Four-seater Mega-GT; new powertrain architecture and product spec in 2023.
  • 2023 - Gripen Workshop - New facility in Ängelholm that expands development and production capacity.

The facility in Ängelholm, former air base for the ”Ghost Squadron” (Armed Forces), may be one of the reasons that characterizes the culture. The ghost on the engine hatch symbolizes the company's ”Spirit of Performance”, uncompromising engineering and results in reality, not just on the drawing board.
