Kaunis Iron is a modern and responsible mining company with its roots deep in the Torne Valley. The company restarted iron ore mining in Kaunisvaara outside Pajala in 2018, with a clear ambition: to build a sustainable and long-term mining business that creates value both for the region and for the global steel industry.
Focusing on high-quality iron ore, Kaunis Iron produces around 2.3 million tons of iron ore concentrate annually - a sought-after raw material for steel mills around the world, not least because of its high iron content and lower environmental impact. Production is carried out using modern and efficient methods where sustainability, safety and innovation go hand in hand.
The company is headquartered in Pajala and employs more than 270 people, many of whom live in the local area. Strong local involvement is a key part of Kaunis Iron's identity - it is not just a mine, but a driving force for community development, employment and confidence in the future of Norrbotten.
Kaunis Iron is actively working to be the mine of the new generation. Through investments in fossil-free transportation, responsible water management, biodiversity and close dialogue with the local community, the company wants to show that mining can be done in a responsible way - ecologically, socially and economically.
With a clear vision to be ”the best mine in the world”, Kaunis Iron continues to develop its business with an eye to the future. Here, tradition and modern technology meet in a common quest to deliver raw materials for a sustainable industry - while protecting the place where it operates.
